an inspiration - dr georgia lee

i think it is such an incredible feat, for a lady to be able to run her family, hold a job, AND pursue her interest all the while keeping herself in tiptop shape.

hopefully, i'll be able to blend work and interests with such finesse in the future :P

back again!

i wanted to move to wordpress, partly because of its cool widgets, but mostly because of how stagnant this blog has been.

yet i was unable to do it - such an attachment to this blog i have developed.

the winners of the 2009 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest have been announced! and in the
Detective Category, we have Eric Rice with:

She walked into my office on legs as long as one of those long-legged birds that you see in Florida - the pink ones, not the white ones - except that she was standing on both of them, not just one of them, like those birds, the pink ones, and she wasn't wearing pink, but I knew right away that she was trouble, which those birds usually aren't.

confessions of a shopoholic

watched it this morning, and i must say, that the netizens are right on this one - the fashion was horrendous. perhaps the producers of the show meant it as an ironic joke, but none of the items on the show looked vaguely attractive! they looked haphazardly thrown together, and always there were too much, too bling, too over the top. if the producers were looking for a visual metaphor of smothering consumerism, then eureka! they've hit the jackpot on this one!

but clothes and apparels aside, i guess this movie did hit the spot on a few issues - that shopping, perhaps, as exhilarating and liberating (you from the bondage of savings :o) as it may be, is but an addiction much like drug dependency.

and now to rid myself of it... wanna buy my auctions, anyone?

futile afternoons

since my efforts at studying in the mid of noon always ends with a pathetic "foomp" onto the bed, ive decided to lounge around and do abit of afternoon reading with pratchett's reaper man.

its pretty awesome so far, and im almost at the end. -grins- what i especially like are the many puns peppered within the pages, more, i think, than any other Pratchett books ive read so far.

the title, even. reaper man... the grim reaper who reaps the harvest (physically, with his scythe - not sickle, mind you), reaping perhaps more than what his employer sowed...

and this - that people would consider a wall of water to be fresh if it contained a newt, but it apparently never did occur to anyone if the newt ever left the body of water to go to the lavatory... eew.

hrm. well, since ive nothing quite substantial to write about, plus the fact that im down to 53 days till the national exams, i'll end the noon-capades here.

its been awhile

its been QUITE sometime since i last posted in blogger! :D

ah. the comfort of a proper typeset and layout -grins-

ho hum, nothing much has happened of late, except for the very repetitive daily cycle of wake, school, tennis, study and sleep.

and right now i am on the later leg of my cycle... sleep beckons with its wandering hands.

id like to address though, the desperate questions of WHY.
there are no answers more adequate, no reasons more acceptable, than the simple BECAUSE. i dont feel like i have to answer to anything, why i did what i did. -shrugs-
why do you care, anyway?

alrighty. i will answer sleep's gentle invitation and smother myself with the love of my blanket :P

on hiatus for abit. ta!

its been awhile

its been so long since i last wrote here! and no happy new year message, too!
good golly. ive been too preoccupied with school life upon embarking on the final semester before the national exam in july. i have been writing, just not over here! :P -sheepish-

and so my 23rd birthday has come and gone, and i am currently remarkably busy with things that i can only describe as rather extra-curricular. things that i should have done with great fervor back in the days i had spent mucking around in World of Warcraft... instead i throw myself into this teeming mess of sports, dance and -gasp- foreign language studies in the semester in which i should devote all my spare time studying for the national exam in august.

on the other hand, it is scary how little we know at this moment. its been almost 3 weeks' worth of clinical studies and everything appears to be an extension of earlier knowledge - extra brainwork to be built on previous academic foundation... which i sorely lack, regrettably! am rather torn between choosing to read our common notes or stick to the recommended text....

anyho, i should really get back to studying... updates soon, i hope!

just a little something

wooo its been QUITE awhile since i blogged - didnt even post my new year's resolution, gack! haha ive been so incredibly busy these days, and well, the readership at my chinese blog has been going up and up! so... ive been paying that patch of the field special attention, and neglecting this poor one here.

well! just an interesting snippet of conversation with ed on msn that i thought id post up:

me: well i think i will meet up with you only in the 2nd week or so, cuz gotta give me time to lose weight lah!
ed: ahah no big deal, its more of the company that matters anyhoo
me: more.. mass?

errr well i found it incredibly funny cuz of the connection between more as in comparatively and more as in more mass (cuz im fat now)

but heee maybe its just the exams.

speaking of which, i better get back to crazy ass neurology! toodles.

evenings with bedfellows

nights like these bring forward the imagery of hot cocoa with marshmallows, baggy pjs and bunny slippers, as well as white, crinkly blankets and fluffy down pillows.

of course, there is then the quintessential man, smelling freshly of aftershave, who leans over and nudges you behind your ear with his nose, breathing in deeply, filling his lungs with your scent. enveloping you in his strong, bronzed arms with a tight squeeze.

and then we can all get down to some winter loving, underneath the heavy sheets, away from the cold, cold breath of winter, billowing outside the bedroom window.

wow

i lead a life controlled by the levels of estrogen, with tendencies due to secretions of cortisol, and sleeping habits dictated by melatonin.

my dreams are governed by REM, my fantasies oriented by neurosynaptic transmissions. the food i consume is integrated into my being by enzymes, and my hunger stimulated by the integral activity of insulin and glucagon. heck, the amount i eat is not even within my control, thanks to the all-powerful satiety center.

i am who i am largely because of my frontal lobe, i move because of my precentral gyrus, my speech coordinated by Broca and Wernicke zones, and my world is but a translation of cones and rods, pieces of reflections mirrored by the occipital lobe. what i hear are but vibrations, sweepings of hair, rumblings of membranes.

my inner core is but an atom. which comes and leaves at ease.

~time to eat, end of lesson.

sheesh

teachers who dont turn up at their allocated lesson slots and then take up other subject's lessons and THEN turn up late, really shouldnt spend the following 10 minutes lecturing us on poor turn-out rate.

no lecture notes too, whee,

start your lesson already, damnit.

personality test

if you had only one wish, which would you choose?

1)for anyone you love to love you back

2)all the riches in the world

3)to be able to travel through time

i know my answer, do you know yours?

discomfort

i dont know whats wrong with me, but ive been having indigestion every time i have something at the school cafeteria of late. it doesnt HURT per se, but it just feels annoyingly uncomfortable, like there is something foul in your stomache and you need vaguely to throw up. and the food just WOULDNT GO DOWN. here i am, posting this piece 10 minutes to 9pm, and yet ive been feeling this way since 1pm. and nothing ive eaten so far is helping to relieve this nasty feeling inside. ugh. and when i burp its still the smell of lunch. sigh.

i have always had this problem, but it used to occur only sporadically. however, of late it has been to the extent that WHENEVER i dared to give the student canteen another go (silly me), i'll have the honor of having indigestion settle upon the poor old stomach.

bah. it wouldnt make sense to have to pop an antacid or whatnots every time i eat a meal, would it? gah. so right now im effectively paying for something that would cost me in well-being. great, just great.

i wish i could get my money back for this one.

babies

i rather like the idea of posting up a photo that's related to the entry i am about to write. gives it more dimension, i suppose.

so there i was, last friday, once again in the familiar TSGH, surrounded by neonates. but this time it was different. the patients were chinese and so were the medical staff hovering nervously around.

under the direction of the doctor-in-charge, we carried out a series of psychomotor tests on the two babies who happened to be baking under the heating lamp when we got there. big one baby and thin one baby, prof. rudnicki would have said. i miss him, i really do. while the doctor did a good job listing out the details we should look out for, there was an obvious lack of passion for his job. don't get me wrong, the professional aspect were all on the spot, but i couldnt help but compare how he didnt take care to introduce himself to the patient through the little things, such as warming up the diaphragm of the stethoscope before placing on the baby's chest. and yet it is the small things that make all the difference between impersonal medical treatment and medical CARE.

looking at their wrinkled sleeping faces, i couldnt' help but wonder what sort of person this little child that im examining now would turn out to be. his life is still so clean a slate, with so many opportunities, so many possibilities. but yet, already, some things are already pre-determined, that will separate this big baby from his neighbor at the ward.

how are their families like? are they both well-to-do? any siblings? what lies ahead for these little sleepy-heads? will they breeze through life successful? will they have a good career, with children of their own? or will they grow up to be criminals? murderers? perverts, maybe?

our lives crossed on that friday afternoon, when you sucked on my finger, made my body tingle. you took note of my existence that day, when i caressed your little ovoid belly and heard your heartbeat. but then that is where we say goodbye, for you wont remember me, and i will not recognize you.

still, i wish for you babies all the best. go forth, develop and learn, grow healthy and strong, for the world is your oyster and it's out there waiting.

moping around...

... makes you blind to the little joys of life.

they pop out like the little shoots of spring - easy to miss but still very much there.

if we could just find the time to count our blessings, i think it is right to say that we will find much to smile about, and a very full heart.

on the wrought iron steps she sits,
ethereal green with fuschia nails.

listening quietly to the whispers of the wind
as autumn sheds its leaves.
